Quick Review: Sugarcoatin' is For Candy & Pacifyin' is For Kids

While I was reading Nonnie Jules’ “Sugarcoatin’ is for Candy and Pacifyin’ is For Kids”, I felt like a child being schooled. And boy was I schooled good. The funny thing is I am not guilty of the Twitter (or social media) transgressions mentioned in the book. If anything, I am the poster child of good Twitter manners and right conduct.

Then why do I feel guilty of breaking some unspoken rules of social media usage? Because it’s brutally honest and I was just being sympathetic to those at the receiving end. They should be cowering by now.

I agree with many points raised in the book and I’m a little on the fence on some issues. If something’s gotta be said, somebody’s gotta have the guts to say it. And that somebody is Nonnie. Her no-nonsense approach can get to you and get to you it will.

Reviews: The Short of It

Been playing catch up with reading and reviewing. I’m 33 books behind schedule. Goodreads said so.  Why should I care about what Goodreads say? You see, I joined the 2015 Reading Challenge and pledged to read 80 books, which translates to 6.66 books per month (I’m glad I’m not superstitious).   Easy peasy, right?  No.  It’s September and I’m still struggling to get halfway through the challenge. I’m still convinced I could do it, but I’m going to need a strategy of some sort.   I realised that I could probably pull this one off by reading all the short stories and novellas on my TBR list. REVIEWS: Kindle Ninja Reads More Chick Lit - Part 2

  I wrote the first part of this 2-part Chick Lit review three months ago for International Women's Day .  I didn't provide an explanation on what brought this on, so, let me just do that now. Chick Lit is a much-derided literary genre and yet it's embraced by millions of readers, largely the female kind. I don't pretend to know how the genre came into existence, but I vaguely remember the genre gaining prominence at the time of the publication of Helen Fielding's "Bridget Jones Diary" . Since then, there were a multitude of writers who went the chick lit route; some were successful, while others disappeared into obscurity. The genre continues to be criticized for the perceived superficiality of the topics and themes.   After reading these books (7 of them), I can safely say that, yes, there are recurring themes and situations that are common in these books. REVIEW: The Betrayal - Family Wars, Glasgow-style

THE BETRAYAL by Linda Tweedie The Coyles and The McClellands – two feuding families intoxicated by power and fueled by revenge. The hatred for each other have sparked bloody encounters that leave a trail of dead bodies, injured relatives, missing family members, and an incarcerated scion. Though the Coyles appear to have a united front, the dysfunctional family dynamics tell otherwise. It’s reminiscent of The Sopranos and The Corleones , but a little less charming and more muscle and grit. The McClellands, on the other hand, may appear to be the weaker of the two, but they are much more cunning and devious, setting the wheels of revenge in motion like clockwork. The Betrayal is a compelling read, especially if you’re into crime family saga where characters have combustible personalities. The overlapping story arcs make for a fascinating read.
